Indonesia includes an incredible diversity of peoples and cultures. The national motto of Indonesia, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in diversity) is not just a slogan. The population of almost 220 million inhabitants knows 1,000 different ethnic and cultural groups. Especially in the countryside besides Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism they honor local, ancient traditions and rituals. Indonesia has a rich colonial past, where the VOC (United East India Company) has played an important role. The Indonesian archipelago consists of 18,100 large and small islands and Jakarta is the capital. Jakarta is without a doubt a metropolis.
